Dr. Howard-John Wesley is the exciting, gifted, and anointed pastor of Alfred Street Baptist Church (ASBC) in Alexandria, Virginia. He’s only the eighth pastor to be installed in the church’s 217-year history. A magna cum laude graduate of Duke University, he’s also a summa cum laude graduate of Boston University School of Theology, where he was a MLK, Jr. Scholar. He received his DMindegree from Northern Baptist Seminary. Currently, he’s part of the inaugural co-hort of the Ph.D. program in African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric at Christian Theological Seminary.

ASBC has grown to 10,000 members under Wesley’s leadership. Time named his sermon, “When the Verdict Hurts,” as one of the best in the U.S. President Obama worshipped at ASBC on several Easter Sundays to hear Dr. Wesley preach. Under his guidance, ASBC became the only faith-based institution to donate $1 million to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Dr. Wesley, twice recognized by The Root as a Top 100 Leader, is also a 2016 NAACP Image Award recipient. He’s a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Sigma Pi Phi Boule. He’s the father of two sons, Howard-John, II and Cooper Reece.
